Transparent video screens are nothing new, but the improved image quality from Samsung’s new technology could make them more appealing to viewers.
At CES 2024 on Sunday, Samsung announced the first transparent version of its micro-LED display technology, claiming it will perform better than other transparent screens. I’ve seen the transparent display concept firsthand in Samsung’s demo. I’ve reviewed hundreds of TVs, but in the short time I tried Samsung’s Concept Display, the Micro-LED version certainly looked the best, especially in terms of brightness and color.

Transparent OLED and LCD-based screens have been around for a while, but Samsung says its Micro-LED display technology produces brighter, clearer images. and It is more transparent than current technology. This means you should be able to see objects on the other side more easily.
While transparent screen technology is cool and could potentially be leveraged within the home – imagine a transparent TV that virtually disappears when not in use – Samsung’s first transparent micro-LED The demonstration was focused on more commercial applications.
The company had installed transparent displays in front of standard televisions showing footage of things like soccer games and fireworks. These were intended to mimic the experience of sitting in a plush box at a match, with clear micro-LED windows overlooking the field. Scores, replays, and highlights are displayed in a “window” that enhances your gaming experience without overshadowing it.
Samsung uses standard opaque micro-LED technology in its huge and expensive The Wall TV, and it’s also used by other companies like Sony and LG. This can also be seen in very small displays, for example in contact lenses with this concept. Samsung says its transparent micro-LED technology is not available on the market, so what I saw was essentially a concept. I’ll be interested to see where the company takes this display technology next.
