OpenAI on Wednesday opened GPT Store, a dedicated AI chatbot app store based on ChatGPT chatbot technology. A variety of GPT custom apps are available, including AllTrails personal trail recommendations, Khan Academy coding tutors, Canva design tools, and book recommendations.
The GPT Store is designed to promote and categorize GPT, making it easier to find what you’re looking for or find something you didn’t even know you needed. Anyone with OpenAI’s $20/month ChatGPT Plus subscription can run GPT. Subscribers can also create their own GPTs without any programming expertise.
Other examples of GPTs currently available include Fitness Trainer, Laundry Buddy Laundry Label Decoder, Music Theory Instructor, Coloring Book Image Generator, Haiku Author, and Veterinarian Advice Pearl for Pets. The GPT Store includes a variety of GPTs created by OpenAI business partners, as well as the broader ChatGPT community, which has collectively built his 3 million GPTs since OpenAI announced his technology in November. ChatGPT is a chatbot based on the company’s GPT-3 and GPT-4 large-scale language models. A successful GPT Store will usher in a new moment when AI technology becomes more approachable, useful and profitable, and solidify OpenAI’s leadership in this space as a company valued by consumers. The GPT store is the equivalent of Apple’s App Store for iPhone apps. And like other app stores, the GPT Store provides a way for his GPT creator to use and profit from her GPT. It’s unclear how exactly that will work, but it’s expected to launch by the end of March.
“As a first step, U.S. builders will receive rewards based on user engagement with GPT,” OpenAI said in a statement. “We will provide further details on payment criteria in due course.”

The company has been allowing users to create their own GPTs, but so far the only way to share them has been through the tedious process of copying and pasting a web address. That is now changing. According to several of his GPT authors, OpenAI told developers on January 4, “We would like to inform you that we will be launching a GPT store next week.” This is a bit later than OpenAI’s originally planned November launch date, but the company has been through some drama with the firing and rehiring of chief executive Sam Altman.
App Store operators like Apple and Google typically keep a portion of the App Store revenue for themselves, often 30%. It remains to be seen what OpenAI will do, but the company plans to turn his GPT into a new business for itself and its GPT creators.
“Revenue sharing is important,” Altman said at a press conference announcing GPT in November. “We’re going to pay a portion of the proceeds to the people who build the most useful His GPT.”
