On the field, it was a magical season for the Texans. Off the field, a legal battle between members of the McNair family clouds the team’s success.
Robert Cary McNair Jr. has asked a court to find team owner Janice McNair declared incompetent and appoint a guardian, according to multiple reports. The application was filed on November 27th.
Janice McNair, 87, is opposing the application along with Texans’ son and CEO Cal McNair.
In December, Janice McNair filed an affidavit accusing Cary McNair of “attempting to limit or terminate my rights and to appoint herself guardian of my property.” The affidavit also accuses him of trying to obtain “confidential financial and personal information.” She asked for all court records to be sealed, arguing that the application was part of a “family dispute” and that the release of details of the fight would have “severe implications for Texans.”
Cal McNair filed another affidavit containing similar, if not identical, allegations.
“I have ownership interest in the Houston Texans NFL franchise and currently serve as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Houston Texans,” Cal McNair said in an affidavit via Click2Houston.com. Stated. “Having the details of this family dispute become public will have a profound impact on Texans. The media will create an unnecessary and baseless uproar regarding Texans ownership and direction.resulting in a negative impact on your employees, business partners, and team.
A preliminary order issued in December sealed the records, but the question of whether they should remain sealed remains in court. A hearing on whether the records will remain sealed was scheduled for Tuesday.
Janice McNair became the Texans’ principal owner in 2018 after team founder Bob McNair passed away. If Cary McNair can become conservator of his mother’s estate, he could (in theory) sell the team.
