Jessica Simpson and her 11-year-old daughter Maxwell are making viewers laugh in a new Chicken of the Sea commercial that pokes fun at Simpson’s reality show past.
The commercial begins with the mother-daughter duo sitting on a couch, with Simpson dipping her fork into a pack of Chicken of the Sea brand tuna.
“Mom, what’s in that bag?” Maxwell asks.
“It’s called ‘Chicken of the Sea,’ but it’s not really that.” chicken — it’s tuna,” Simpson replied. “So don’t let that fool you.”
“Who would be confused by that?” Maxwell replies.
Simpson responded defensively. I’m not your mother,” I said, then laughed awkwardly.
In 2003, the singer and fashion designer famously got confused about what was in a can of Chicken of the Sea during an episode of MTV’s reality show Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica.
In what became one of the show’s most memorable moments, Simpson ate a bowl of Chicken of the Sea while sitting on the couch.
“Is this my chicken or my fish?” she asked a stunned Lachey, Simpson’s husband at the time.
“I know it’s tuna,” she added. “But along the coast, it says chicken.”
The new commercial, in which Simpson co-stars with her daughter, isn’t the first time Simpson has poked fun at her turbulent past.
In 2017, Simpson revived that iconic moment after reading a headline about Whole Foods recalling its chicken salad after learning it contained tuna instead of chicken.
Simpson tweeted support for Whole Foods on Twitter at the time, joking that “this is the best thing that could have happened to us.”
In 2021, she issued a warning to the restaurant chain in response to a lawsuit that accused Subway of serving fake tuna in Subway and Wraps. Similar message on Twitter.
“It’s okay @Subway. It’s confusing,” Simpson tweeted.
