After nearly 20 years of traveling the world for work and pleasure, I’ve developed quite a few routines, especially when it comes to packing. While a lot has changed since the advent of smart, trackable luggage and apps that can instantly translate menus (finally, no more food surprises!), there are a few timeless items I always pack for any summer trip. These are my must-haves:
Nomatic Packing Cubes
I used to be a firm believer in the military-style roll method, but after discovering these packing cubes, my views have changed. I now use a combination of rolls and these sleek black cubes, which come in a variety of sizes to fit my luggage. The zippered compression system saves up to 50% of the space, so you can pack more than you thought possible and make room for items you pick up along the way.
Fola sunscreen and face oil
Sun protection is important all year round, but it’s crucial to make sure you use a reef-safe sunscreen that protects the ocean from harmful chemicals. Based in British Columbia, Forah makes a great mineral SPF for everyday use, as well as cleansing oils and serums to hydrate skin after travel or a day in the water.
Y.S. Hat
As the proud owner of an authentic hat wall adorned with hats from all over the world, it’s fair to say I’m a bit of a connoisseur, and this Southern California milliner makes some of my favorite affordable hats.
Kayla Grey rollerball perfume
I used to fill my perfumes with travel size atomizers, but that was before I discovered this Western-made fragrance by Cayla Gray. This rollerball perfume uses clean ingredients and smells like a real dessert without being cloyingly sweet. The whipped cream, tonka bean, and coconut scent is romantic and can easily be worn from day to night.
Tide Stick
This essential hardly needs any introduction. As someone who regularly ends up with red sauce on my crisp white t-shirts, it’s a must-have. Throw it in your carry-on and always keep it in your purse for nights out.
July’s baggage
I recently started using July’s Carry-On Pro and over-the-handle Weekender combo and I’m hooked. The Roller has a polycarbonate hardshell front pocket for your laptop and a removable power bank to keep your gear in order while on the go. It also has compression straps that work like a dream. I was able to pack my snow trip clothes, including ski pants and a jacket, and still have plenty of room for my après-ski gear. The best part is that it comes with a lifetime warranty, so if your luggage gets damaged beyond use, you can get it replaced for free.
Hoka Bondy 8
Sneakers are always the first thing I pack in my carry-on. I recently ran my first half marathon and these sneakers got me through training and race day, even with sore knees. I also brought them on a recent trip to Lanai and Punta Mita and always get compliments on the vibrant color.
Downy Light Fresh Wrinkle Releaser
As a member of the carry-on only club, it can be a real challenge for me to pack bulky jackets, boots, sweaters, etc. for snowy trips, and this wrinkle-removing spray helps keep everything looking and smelling fresh, even if it gets a little squished in your suitcase.
Earplanes earplugs
Earplugs are one of my go-to travel essentials no matter the season. While there are fancier noise-canceling earplugs available, I like these because if I lose them, I won’t have to spend a fortune.
Kitsch eye mask
I’m a light sleeper and any little disturbances in my environment can kill my nighttime energy. Blocking out light really helps regulate my circadian rhythm, especially when changing time zones. I love that this product is made from silk and comes with a matching scrunchie that you can tie up to prevent breakage while you sleep.
Beam Melatonin
While there is new scientific research that suggests relying on melatonin long term is bad for your brain, it can really help you get used to a new time zone. I usually stick to 5mg or less to help you get used to it, but I personally like the 3mg option at Trader Joe’s. If you want to splurge, Beam sells Dream Powder, a delicious, soothing combination of CBD and melatonin with a holiday salted caramel flavor that will have you falling asleep in no time.
Drip Drop Electrolyte Powder
DripDrop contains Vitamins B3, B5, B6 and B12 to promote healthy energy, metabolism and proper cellular function, as well as Magnesium, Potassium, Vitamin C and Zinc for immune support and recovery. Personally, I think it tastes better than other hydration drinks like Gatorade or Pedialyte and it’s easy to slip into your pocket or backpack. Use it on a night when you’ve had too many cocktails or add it to your in-flight water to prevent dehydration and altitude sickness.
