houston – This Tuesday is National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.
This day falls on January 9th every year. This day is a day to honor those who have dedicated their lives to the safety and security of our communities.
The day was established in 2015 as a way to show gratitude to American military officers. The program was created in response to a series of police shootings in Missouri in 2014.
In response to the backlash following the incident, the national organization Concerned for Police Survivors (COPS) began an effort to change negative portrayals of police officers in the news to positive ones. This day is also a day to raise awareness about the difficult decisions police officers have to make.
“The recent negative attitudes toward law enforcement nationwide have prompted a call to action for law enforcement officers to choose the difficult and sometimes impossible profession of public service to all of us as citizens. “We need to demonstrate that we are aware of this,” the organization said.
There are several ways to show your support for police on Tuesday.
The organization COPS shared different ways to show support.
They encourage people to wear blue to support law enforcement. You can also send a support card to your local police department or state agency.
The organization also encourages people to share stories about positive experiences with law enforcement on social media.
