Last year, Trey Cabage played against the Houston Astros. This year, for they.
When Cambage joined the Los Angeles Angels last summer, his MLB debut was against the Astros, and he got a chance to meet some of the players and get a glimpse of them from across the diamond.
This year has been a much different one, as after being traded to Houston last offseason, he now has an inside look at how the team operates.
And so far, he’s happy with what he’s seen.
In a recent interview with Apollo Media, the 27-year-old outfielder spoke about joining the Astros and his feelings about his new teammates.
“Everybody in the clubhouse just wants to win. Everybody in the clubhouse is fighting for the guy next to them, and that’s great,” Cambage said. “If you’re there to win, they don’t care. They’re just ready to go, and that’s the best thing about them. You can be any player you want, as long as you go out and win baseball games.”
That’s the benefit of having a veteran, battle-tested team. Some of Houston’s players, such as Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve, have played together for years, and there’s a strong sense of camaraderie in the clubhouse that Cambage picked up on quickly. He also said he felt welcomed despite transferring from a division rival.
As for his new teammate, Cambage said Bregman is not as serious as he thought he was, but is more of a “kid.” Cambage is also a big fan of Altuve, praising his positive attitude and great work ethic.
“Oh man, he’s amazing. Every time he comes in he asks everybody, ‘How are you doing?'” Cambage said. “It’s unbelievable to see how hard he works. And it’s unbelievable what he’s able to do as a phenomenal athlete. And to still be doing it at 34, he’s a legend.”
Cabbage seems to be happy and comfortable in his new environment, especially as the Astros have turned things around this season. His performance has improved, and his OPS is up nearly 80 points from last year.
No wonder he’s having so much fun.
