Mawen Tomac The French native announced his decision to swim and study at the University of California, Berkeley, starting next fall.

Tomac, a member of the Amiens Métropole Nation and representative of France internationally, will take part in the 2024 Gaulish invasion of Berkeley, which began with a verbal commitment last fall from his compatriots Lilou Lessincourt and Mary-Ambre Morphe. . Tomac, France’s top backstroker, currently owns the SCM 200 backstroke national record and a large number of French age records. He recently placed third at the 2023 European Short Course Championships, lowering his own French national record in the 200 meters to 1:48.55. He won gold medals in the 50 back (22.85 points) and 100 back (49.72 points) at the same competition. In preparation for the European Games, he won the 50 back (22.96), 100 back (49.99) and 200 back (1:49.21) at the French Short Course Nationals held in Angers in October. His 1:49.21 in the 200 back was his national record, lower than his own record (1:49.61) set in Melbourne in December 2022.
Tomac also won the French Long Course Nationals last June with a 50/100/200. At last summer’s Longway World Championships, he placed fourth in the 200 back, eighth in the 100 back, and led the French medley relay that finished fourth in the final.
His conversion time would have allowed him to score in the 100/200 A final at the 2023 NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships.

Tomac told SwimSwam that she chose Cal to swim with “the best backstrokers in the world.” In addition to the men’s college team, he will train with Ryan Murphy, Destin Lasko and other members of the California pro group in the offseason.
