Ahead of a winter storm expected to hit the Chicago area, Illinois on Monday issued a warning to motorists, warning of slippery conditions with reduced visibility and urging residents to avoid travel if possible. Ta.
A winter weather warning is in effect across the region, with the first snow expected to begin Monday night. Up to 11 inches of snow could fall in some places, but snowfall totals can vary depending on where you live.
In preparation for the heavy snowfall, the Illinois Department of Transportation has prepared more than 1,800 trucks and equipment to treat, salt and clear roads across the state, according to a news release from Illinois officials. Snow removal crews began pre-treating roads and bridges on Monday and will continue to be on the roads even after the snow has stopped falling.
IDOT is reminding drivers to allow snowplows and trucks enough space to clear roads.
State officials recommend staying home as much as possible, but if you need to go out, it’s best to schedule extra time.
“If you must travel, please be aware that your destination may have significantly more snow than your departure location,” state officials said. “Slow down, expect significantly longer travel times, longer braking distances, and expect worsening conditions.”
Illinois State Police Commissioner Brendan F. Kelly urged residents to be on the lookout for emergency vehicles on the side of the road.
“Be sure to remove snow and ice from your car before hitting the road, plan extra time to drive slowly, and move for emergency vehicles responding to weather-related collisions. “It’s something as simple as that. It can mean the difference between safe travel and dangerous travel,” he said.
IDOT has issued the following advisories and suggestions for motorists.
- First ask yourself: Is this trip really necessary, or can it be postponed?
- Check current road conditions 24/7 at GettingAroundIllinois.com. You can also follow IDOT on Facebook. X.
- Check the weather forecast and let someone know your travel route and schedule.
- Fill your tank or fully charge your car and pack winter essentials like a cell phone charger, warm clothing, blankets, food, water, a first aid kit, washer fluid, and an ice scraper.
- Be especially careful in areas prone to icing, such as slopes, bridges, curves, and shaded areas. Be careful of black ice. Even if the roads look clean, they can be very slippery.
- Give the snowplow enough space. Please do not crowd the snowplows. And don’t try to overtake. The situation in front of the plow will be worse than behind.
- Keep your distance from them. When approaching a stopped vehicle, slow down, change lanes, and follow move-over laws.
- Please always wear your seat belt. This is the law and your best protection in case of an accident.
- Drop it and drive. Put down your mobile device. This is also a law.
- If you are involved in a collision, stay in your vehicle. Getting out of your car near a busy road can have deadly consequences.
