Draymond Green isn’t happy with Dallas Mavericks’ Klay Thompson’s new jersey number.
not at all.
“It’s a terrible story,” Draymond Green said on the “Club 520 Podcast.” “Someone said to me, ‘Hey, [No.] “They said, ’31 is Reggie Miller’s number.’ I said, ‘Yeah, but he’s Klay Thompson.'”
With new Mavericks teammate Kyrie Irving already wearing the No. 11 jersey that Thompson wore with the Warriors, the four-time NBA champion was left in the position of having to choose a new number.
And Thompson not only chose the number Miller wore, but also that of his and Green’s former teammate, Festus Ezeli, who tried to defend Dallas’ blockbuster contract in his number choice.
“And Festus Ezeri [No.] “I was 31 and Festus tried to attack me on Instagram,” Green added. [No.] “31 years old?”
Green responded:
“‘I was wearing it! What do you mean?’
Green and Ezeli know each other well, having begun their NBA journeys together and won a championship together a few years later in 2015.
But that didn’t stop Green from delivering some humorous criticism of his former teammate and friend for trying to defend the No. 31 jersey.
“Look, I love Fez,” Green said. “We won championships together. We got drafted together. But if you’re wearing that number, Klay probably shouldn’t be wearing that number.”
And, no matter how much he tried to argue, maybe Ezeli shouldn’t have told Green that he wears Michael Jordan’s No. 23.
“He said, ‘Well. [Michael Jordan’s] “23,” Green said. “Honestly, Fez, MJ is top two in NBA history.”
“He’s top two. The difference between Michael Jordan and me is a lot smaller than the difference between Klay Thompson and Festus Ezeli.”
“I’m not top 100, but the gap between the two of us and the gap between Festus Ezeli and Klay Thompson…
“MJ is MJ. The gap between me, him, Clay and Festus is about the size of the Empire State Building.”
While it was just good-natured banter from the Warriors’ star forward, Green continued to lash out at his former teammate.
“Big guy, bad hands,” Green concluded. “That’s what’s wrong with No. 31. I like you, Fez, but there’s no point in you commenting, ‘What’s wrong with No. 31?’, so you had to have it.”
“Look at Klay and number 31! We get number 1! We get number 10! Kylie gets number 11. Okay, no problem. Number 31?”
Now that the reservations have been taken care of, we move on to green number 31.
