The New York Jets entered the 2023 season with high expectations. All that evaporated when quarterback Aaron Rodgers went down with a torn Achilles tendon after four snaps.
With the regular season over, the Jets are starting to look on the outside again. They have now missed the playoffs for 13 straight years, the longest playoff drought in the entire NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL.
Rodgers knows the stakes are high in the 2024 season as pressure mounts on the club to make a real run in the postseason. The four-time MVP made surprising remarks to reporters Monday about the team’s culture.
“Everything we do in this building that has nothing to do with winning needs to be evaluated,” Rodgers said. He added that there are “bulls” that need to be cut for next season.
In the ultra-competitive AFC, the Jets have little margin for error. Especially being in a division with the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins. They need to find the right people to help right this ship, especially on the offensive end.
New York finished the year ranked 31st in total offense (268.6), 30th in passing offense (171.7) and 29th in scoring offense (15.8). This is definitely not going to continue, and Rodgers knows that.
General manager Joe Douglas and head coach Robert Saleh have their work cut out for them over the next few months. The roster needs serious improvement along the offensive line and receiving corps, in addition to eliminating players who don’t bring New York a winning attitude.
Our mission in 2024 is simple. To make the playoffs and break the longest playoff drought in American sports.
